What’s essential to capture and remember is sometimes unrecognizable to the eye. A wedding photographer is therefore obliged to pick these precious moments from the ceremony’s fabric, craft them creatively, and showcase them to the world. Arjun perceives each wedding photography shoot as a unique story and not just another gig. This reflects in his pictures, for they are expressive and moving; just as a couple would expect them to be.

I was on the holy grounds of an earthy rock-sculpted temple, and with me, I had Priyanka and Pritorthi for their memorable prewedding photoshoot in Bangalore. The air was filled with the fragrance of yellow and crimson marigolds, and we could hear the parrots chirping in the courtyard. And in the quaint, blissful setting, Priyanka and Pritorthi offered their worship to the deities and then ambled through the crisp, stone-patched grounds of the temple. With the sun shining just slightly above our heads that morning, I had the perfect setting for sculpting a prewedding photoshoot.

The evening air was fragrant with the scent of luscious red roses, and the sky was just a few minutes shy of sublime dusk. I was strolling the royal milieus of Hyderabad’s Fort Grand, its towering beige and grey stone structure capturing much of my vision and imagination. There I was in the graceful company of the most beautiful bride, Sreethika. She was adorned in a delicate golden saree and intricate diamond jewels, her eyes filled with a joy that’s hard to replicate. As she played with the delicate veil and ambled gleefully alongside me, I did what I loved the most.

The quaint and history-laden city of Nizams was shining with a golden glamour when I awoke there one fine morning. I remember making my way to The Reserve as the breezes accompanied my car and cottony clouds played a game of chase above. I was there to capture the cocktail and sangeet ceremonies of Sreethika and Ranadeep, an adoring couple with a vivacious family. The haldi wedding photoshoot began with romantic portraits of the bride and groom-to-be, as a jovial Sreethika posed in her delicate pastel yellow lehenga and floral ornaments. At the same time, Ranadeep graced the frame with a vivacious smile as his embellished white kurta glowed with gentle sparks of light. Soon enough, friends and family gathered to colour the bride and groom in vibrant shades of marigold and turmeric.

The winter sun was slowly waking up over Maharashtra skies, painting them gorgeous in shades of azure blue and white. The air was crisp and fresh, sprayed with the songs of birds and the dew of the many emerald trees around. I was in the charming old city of Solapur, in a region that exudes multi-cultural flavours. Having learned about its tri-linguistic blend of Kannada, Marathi, and Telugu cultures, I was eagerly looking forward to the next couple of days that awaited me. I was there to document the holy union of Priyanka and Aniket, an adoring couple anticipating their charming and traditional south Indian wedding. The two-day celebration began with the groom’s gala entry to the venue. Soon enough, the couple’s loved ones all gathered to exchange gifts and offer worships for the engagement, tying the two families in a sacred bond.

It was a fine morning to remember. We had left the bittersweet hustle of Bengaluru a few dozen kilometres behind. And here we were, under the cooling shade of eucalyptus trees, the air sprayed minty with their bewitching scent. When I greeted the bride at her home, I recall feeling immense purpose and pleasure in my duty of chronicling memories. The ceremonies chimed in after sunset, as the sun had finished its journey across the day. A gleeful Jayasri engaged in banter with her friends and cousins, while on the other, a poised Yaswanth welcomed the merriment with his dear ones. And then, a series of dainty rituals made way for utterly loving and happy moments, marking all the grace on this Indian engagement photoshoot.

The air was fragrant with the scent of flowers and that occasional whiff of mud rising from the freshly watered foliage that covered the landscape. I was there to chronicle the blissful Indian wedding of Chaitra and Kunal, a cheerful couple accompanied by the most adoring group of family and friends. The merriments began with the families all gathered up in the courtyard, dancing to the lively music that flowed from the bandsmen’s flamboyant instruments. Hours spun with felicity at this wedding in Bangalore, and soon enough, the families gathered for pre-wedding rituals. Lakshmi and Rajani Kanth had one such celebration, which bloomed over a convivial four days in the presence of all their loved ones. The first day came with a bounty of colours and devotion, a holy beginning to the merriment that would gracefully unfold. Bale Shastra and Haldi were held along with many sweet auspicious pujas, and the day wrapped itself at dusk to the chatter of a family union. The next celebration brought with it henna-dipped hands and delicate smiles as the women gathered at both Lakshmi and Rajani Kanth’s house for Mehndi. While the ebullient bride got her hands painted, her friends and family all took centre stage with music, dance, and anecdotes.

The air was pleasant, and the sun looked like a ball of fresh gold when I drove down to Vasudaa’s maternal home in Karur. The house had an old-world vibe, the kind that pleases your heart and makes you long for the simplest things in life. The evening was blooming with colourful shades in Karur, and I had made my way to Vasudaa’s paternal home. Her loved ones were all immersed in deep joy, enjoying the sweet rituals that were ringing in one after the other. Gifts were offered, and blessings were sought before everyone moved to Atlas Kalairangam to kickstart the celebration. The vibrant wedding reception lasted well into the night, where a glowing Vasudaa and a vivacious Harsan joined all their loved ones for a mirthful ceremony.

Anisha and Rohit’s wedding was a blithely seven-day affair. It was a vivacious week, and the weather gave an impression that all of Hyderabad was participating in the couple’s union. The first few days were about delving into a Telugu wedding’s festive traditions, where Anisha’s loved ones all gathered at her scenic villa in Hyderabad. Cocktail marked the beginning of the weeklong party, whereas Pellikuthuru brought the onset of the wedding rituals. It was followed by an elegant Haldi with pleasant earthy shades all around. Then came a colourful Mehendi that took everyone on a round of lively music and dance. It made way for Pradhanam, which was the final rite before the wedding ceremony.

Hyderabad was still waking up to a pleasant dawn when I made my way to an archaic temple in Ammapally with Anisha and Rohit. Dating back to the 12th century, the sacred temple gave an old-world vibe, making the morning even more holy and tranquil. This location was close to the couple’s heart because just a few days later, they would tie the blessed knot here. As we stepped into the temple grounds, the air was alive with the chatter of children playing in nearby alleys and the occasional ring of the temple bell. And under a rustic setting, there were the bride and groom to be, bringing the place a burst of colour and happiness with their loving presence.

As much as a wedding is a celebration of love, it is also a coming together of families, a harbinger of pure happiness, and a commemoration of the good things in life. Samhita and Rohan’s wedding was a three-day affair, with traditional Hyderabadi rituals meeting at the shore of contemporary times. On the first evening, Sangeet pulled everyone to the dance floor, with heartfelt solo performances dedicated to the bride and groom. By the end of it all, everyone indulged in hourlong merrymaking, dancing as if the earth was spinning its last. The next morning brought the yellows of the sun and Haldi together, and the bride’s home chimed with wedding folk songs, giggles, and stories of love. An ebullient Samhita sat there with the widest grin her face could possibly muster, gleefully accepting all the whispered blessings, the splashes of turmeric, and the fortunes of the day.

The crisp pre-winter breezes stayed mellow with warm conversations, as shehnais and drums kept soft company throughout. The aroma of jasmines and turmeric, rose itras and Indian spices all lingered at different hours, making for a pleasant and amusing welcome of the events. Varsha and Pardeep’s wedding was a commingling of two different cultures, drenched in brilliant colours and sunshine. The upbeat vibes of a Punjabi shaadi readily met with the rich South Indian traditions, and what resulted was three days of sheer ebullience. Between a gold-tinted haldi, a pastel wedding, and a lucent reception, the two families came together in great tastes, filling up the photographer in me with umpteen unique moments to capture.

Shilpa & Varun - Wedding Story

Breathing a tranquil air away from Hyderabad's hubbub is the splendid Falaknuma Palace. Built in the 1890s, the palace was home to the royals until 2010, when its magnificent gates were opened to the rest of the world as a lavish hotel. 'Falak-Numa' roughly translates from Urdu to ‘Like the Sky', and honestly, the name could not be more fitting. The palace evinces opulence and grandeur, deeming your feet too small to traverse its circumference at a go. Holding countless chandeliers, lamps, and golden accessories, it shines just like a sky full of stars. While walking through its monumental halls with ceilings covered in frescoes, Arjun observed the hints of English architecture scattered throughout. He grinned, reflecting on the rich history and splendour that surrounded him at that moment. He recalls Shilpa and Varun’s wedding as a lively affair immersed in laughter and celebrations. Capturing the essence of a Hindu wedding in this album, the photographer steals joyous moments from the many ceremonies and renders them treasure worthy.

When love gives you a fairytale, you make the best of it. Bubba and Seun are two people who believe in this unceasingly. A cinematographer himself, Bubba came across Arjun’s work as his senior at their film school, the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Los Angeles. He showed it to Seun, his fiancé at the time, who instantly fell in love with the pictures. The couple ended up inviting Arjun to picturesque Hawaii to chronicle their wedding. He recalls it as an unforgettable experience. Captured faithfully in the photographs is the happiness that envelops the family members, just as much as it embraces the bride and groom. Kelsi & Randy - Wedding Story

A wedding is something that comes after careful anticipation which may have lasted for months, years, or even a lifetime. The day arrives faster than it should or perhaps later than you thought it would, but isn’t that the beauty of love? To let it take the lead and trust its every step? And along the way, it instills hopes and dreams in you, and when the right time arrives, it gives you a whole fairytale. So you decide to carry on because it feels like home. Arjun remembers Kelsi and Randy’s wedding as a joyous one. It was held at Kelsi's majestic maiden home in Redlands, California. For the day, the backyard was carefully decorated with little trinkets, giving the atmosphere a sublime and homely charm. Rich with olive trees and grapevines, the place had a Mediterranean vibe to it. The atmosphere was rustic yet classy, made perfect by an old oak tree under which the couple exchanged their rings. Being wed in a home where you grew up- where you watched your life bloom, made all the memories you cherish so dearly- is indeed a heartwarming experience. And one could see that in Kelsi’s eyes.
